PREPARATION PROGRAMME
Readiness is not a feeling. It is something you build.
The Preparation Programme is a structured, seven-week course for corporate professionals who are serious about starting a business and want to do the groundwork before they commit. It builds capability through real action and reflection, not theory, not motivation, and not a score that tells you whether you are ready.

WHAT THIS IS, AND WHAT IT IS NOT
This is a development programme, not a course you watch and not a checklist you tick. Over seven modules you do real work, structured exercises and a genuine experiment that you design and run, with reflection that is paced rather than rushed. It does not score your readiness or hand down a verdict, and it will never tell you not to start a business. What it does is build the way you think and act before the stakes are real.
THE SEVEN MODULES
The programme runs in sequence. Each module builds on the one before, and a single real experiment runs through the middle of it, designed early, tested properly, and reviewed at the end.
- 1Effectual Reasoning
- 2Your Starting Position
- 3Taking the First Step
- 4Seeing What Is There
- 5Testing It Properly
- 6The Numbers Underneath
- 7Pulling It Together
One real experiment runs through Modules 3 to 7.
Effectual Reasoning
How experienced founders actually think, starting from what you already have rather than a fixed plan.
Your Starting Position
An honest look at the corporate supports you lean on now, and which of them will not be there.
Taking the First Step
Acting before you feel ready, and designing the real experiment you will run through the programme.
Seeing What Is There
Spotting genuine opportunities in friction, in change, and in what you already know that others do not.
Testing It Properly
Turning a hunch into a precise question and running the cheapest test that gives you a real answer.
The Numbers Underneath
Your runway, your floor, and the gap between them, worked out for your own household.
Pulling It Together
Reading your experiment's result honestly and turning intention into a concrete plan.
WHAT IT ASKS OF YOU
Each module takes two to three hours of focused work, spread across a few sittings. The whole programme is roughly eighteen to twenty-five hours over about seven weeks. A deliberate twenty-four hour pause is built in between the practical work and the reflection in each module, because thinking that is rushed is not thinking. You cannot complete this in fifteen-minute bursts on your phone, and it is not meant to be. If you do not have the time to give it, this is not the right tool for you, and that is a fair thing to know upfront.
WHAT IT IS BUILT ON
The programme rests on three strands of entrepreneurship training that have randomised controlled trial support: personal initiative training, published in Science and repeated across several countries; effectuation training, tested in a randomised field experiment; and the scientific approach to entrepreneurial decision-making, which improved measured returns in a controlled study. Almost no comparable tool can point to that evidence. We are also honest about its limits. Those studies were run with people different from South African corporate professionals, and the programme says so where it matters rather than pretending the research transfers cleanly.
WHO IT IS FOR
It is for the corporate professional who is seriously weighing the move and wants to build real capability before committing money or handing in notice. It suits people willing to do structured work and to sit with honest questions about their own readiness, their finances, and their fit. It is not for someone looking for a quick answer or a motivational push, and it is not a tool that will make the decision for you. The decision stays yours. The programme makes you better equipped to make it.
WHERE THIS FITS
Launchworks helps you discover a direction, stress-test an idea, and set the business up. The Preparation Programme sits before all of that, for people who are not yet sure they are ready to begin. When you finish, it points you into the first stage with the groundwork already done. You do not have to do it. Many people will be ready to start at Stage 1 today. This is for the ones who want to build the readiness first.
